A sparkling romantic comedy, "Barefoot in the Park" brings out the efforts of a young married couple to build their lives together and, especially, to harmonize their personalities that often give birth to contradictory feelings and manifestations. Impulsive and impetuous, Corrie Bratter assumes the sole role of being "Paul’s wife" and invests her full energy into making him happy, despite the inherent difficulties at the beginning of the marriage. Paul, a beginner lawyer who has just won his first six cents in a process, has instead a reserved nature and a more prudent look on reality. The conflict arises from the comical impact of their different natures, which leads them in the shortest time on the verge of separation and of divorce. To walk or not "barefoot in the park" summarizes metaphorically the conflict between the two lovers. The space in which their love story will carry on is a tiny apartment, where it snows through a skylight, the central heating is broken, and the closet will be used as a bedroom that fits a bed and nothing more. To all these we may add the presence of the highly spiritual neighbour Victor Velasco and of Paul’s mother-in-law, Ethel Banks, with personalities as different as those of the two young married. The comic is accentuated by the fact that the apartment being located on the sixth floor in a building without elevator, all the characters lose their breath before they arrive in this space that doesn’t promise anything good, and yet ...
