One of the most performed plays of the American playwright Tennessee Williams, "The Glass Menagerie" takes its tragic meaning from the divers illusions that the members of the Wingfield family build themselves - the mother (Amanda), caught in a brighter past, the son (Tom), bond to the family and to a job without perspective and the daughter (Laura), infirm and incredibly shy, concerned only with her glass figures collection. Dreaming of her past glory, the mother lives with the obsession of finding a suitor for Laura, event which might also improve the financial troubles of the family.
The event that changes the monotonous rhythm of their existence is Jim's visit, former schoolmate of Tom and Laura. In Jim, Laura recognizes the charming boy that she had secretly loved long ago. For a second we remain with the impression that everything could end well and in harmony, but the reality proves that all dreams are as fragile as the china ornaments collected by Laura.
